Informix - Problem description
Problem IC61144 | Status: Closed |
CHECKPOINTS OCCUR EVERY SECOND WHEN CREATING AN ONLINE INDEX ON A TEMPORARY TABLE IN A TEMP DBSPACE
product: | |
IBM IDS ENTRP E / 5724L2304 / B15 - IDS 11.50
Problem description: | |
When creating an index on a non-logged temporary table in a temp dbspace and using the ONLINE keyword, the Informix Dynamic Server (IDS) is placed into a state where users cannot access the IDS because checkpoints are occurring every second. This has reproduced with no rows in the temporary table. If the ONLINE keyword is removed or there are no temporary dbspaces defined, the issue does not occur.

**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: * * All Users * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: * * Creating index in online mode on temporary tables from * * temporary dbspace can potentially hang the server and server * * issues rapid check points. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * * Please upgrade to IDS 11.50xC5 when available. * ****************************************************************
Local Fix: | |
To prevent this do not create the index with the ONLINE keyword or create the table in a non-temporary dbspace.
Solution | |
The problem is first fixed in IDS 11.50xC5 and IDS 10.00xC11. Basically, user created temporary tables are used only by the session that creates it, hence there won't be any parallel dmls on the table and so it won't make much sense to create an index in online mode. After the fix, server now internally creates the normal index.
