SQL0119 ERROR RETURNED WHEN GROUP BY CLAUSE INCLUDES TO_DATE SCALAR
FUNCTION

product:
DB2 FOR LUW / DB2FORLUW / 970 - DB2
Problem description:
A SQL0119 error may be returned in DB2 version 9.7 Fix Pack 4
when TO_DATE is used in a GROUP BY clause. This can happen when
a format-string is specified and it is a string constant. For
example:

select to_date(DT, 'YYYYMMDD') from T group by to_date(DT,
'YYYYMMDD')

SQL0119N An expression starting with "DT" specified in a SELECT
clause, HAVING clause, or ORDER BY clause is not specified in
the GROUP BY clause or it is in a SELECT clause, HAVING clause,
or ORDER BY clause with a column function and no GROUP BY clause
is specified. SQLSTATE=42803
Problem Summary:
APAR fix is available in V9.7 Fixpack 5.
Local Fix:
Rewrite the query such that the TO_DATE expression is not
duplicated, for example:

select D from ( select to_date(DT, 'YYYYMMDD') from T ) T(D)
group by D
