Informix - Problem description

VERSION UPGRADE CAN FAIL WITH NO CLUE AS TO WHAT'S WRONG

Problem description:
An upgrade from older version to e.g. version 14.10 can fail
early on without any information what's wrong:

09:20:40  IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 
09:20:46  Conversion from version  Started
09:20:56  Checking partition header pages for needed free space
09:20:56  Checking for free space in partition header pages
succeeded
09:20:59  A restore point was created and data is being stored
in directory /.
09:20:59  Conversion control block initialization
09:20:59  Succeeded
09:20:59  Initialization of Conversion Session
09:20:59  The restore point ended and related data in directory
/ were removed.
09:20:59
09:20:59  Conversion failed.
09:20:59  FAILED
09:20:59  Restart conversion after fixing the problem.
09:20:59  oninit: Fatal error in shared memory initialization

With this precise scenario, there are two possible reasons for
this failure:
 - the physical log not being logically empty (left over from
 shutdown)
 - at least one logical log before the current one not flagged
as backed up ('B')

Local Fix:
Restart old version, make sure there all logs are flagged 'B'
(if only by resetting LTAPEDEV to /dev/null) and perform a clean
shutdown using onmode -kuy.
